D iscovering the joy and passion for painting came late in my life, after working as a registered nurse for 26 years, raising children, and playing music since I was 15. The experience of applying thick, rich oil paint to canvas to capture the essence of the subject before me is challenging yet rewarding at the same time. Following the light, observing the values, atmosphere and spacial relationships while allowing my own sense of artistic interpretation to flow freely leads to many hours of peaceful solitude in my studio.

My goal is to draw the viewer into the painting, to see the brushstrokes, the collision of color, the hint of movement, and to wonder at what’s been left “unsaid”. Inspirations for paintings come from many sources – I just never know what’s going to move me enough to want to capture it on canvas. Whether walking around our farm, driving through our beautiful county located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, traveling to other areas, or seeing something in the house in a new way, it seems I’m never at a loss for a new subject matter.
I grew up in Alexandria, Virginia and graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Urban and Regional Planning. My desire to do more for people led me to gain an AD in Nursing from Wytheville Community College in 1983. My husband Mac and I have lived in Floyd County, Virginia since 1990, and we’ve embraced the rural lifestyle and music heritage here. We’ve been fortunate enough to travel across the United States playing old-time mountain music for events as well as duet singing influenced by the great country singing and style popular in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
While limited in experience of art education, I’m so fortunate that I can attend a local weekly art class led by Karen Sewell where I have learned to create art. It’s been an incredible adventure so far and has added to the richness of my life in unexpected ways.
